Although better known for his successes in open-wheeled racers, Mario Andretti won the 1972 12-hr Sebring race on March 25th in his Ferrari 312PB sports car (s/n 0882). Andretti partnered Jackie Ickx for the race in the no. 2 car shown here just leading the 312PB of Clay Regazzoni/Brian Redman who retired on lap 215.
The winning pair are seen at the start before going on to complete a total of 259 laps. Ferrari’s 312 PB of 1972 used a detuned version (445 hp) of the flat-12 engine first seen in 1970 in Ferrari’s 312B Formula 1 car, winning 10 races of the 11 in that year.
