The 36th edition of the re-enactment of Italy’s fabled Mille Miglia open-road race has been scheduled for May 16-19, 2018. It will start in Brescia on Wednesday May 16, then trace the classic route to Rome and back before ending in Brescia on Saturday May 19.
Ninety-one years have passed since the first of the 24 speed editions — held from 1927 to 1957 — took place, and they were followed by three held to a rally format, from 1959 to 1961, so the 36th re-enactment of Mille Miglia will be the 63rd automotive competition under the sign of the Freccia Rossa, the Red Arrow.
Every year, the route undergoes modifications in order to take the Mille Miglia to the places it has not passed through for some years and, continuing with this philosophy for 2018, some changes have been made made to the route.
As in 2017, the Mille Miglia will be held in four stages over as many days, but next year’s race will start a day earlier, on Wednesday May 16, and will return to Viale Venezia on Saturday afternoon, May 19. There, on the stage of Piazza della Loggia, the prize giving ceremony will take place.
One feature of the 2018 edition will be the passage to Lucca and along Versilia. After the restoration of the ancient road, the Mille Miglia will finally be able to travel once again through a section of the route of the 1949 edition, between Sarzana and Passo della Cisa. Including the re-enactment editions, 1949 was the only year in which the route crossed over the CISA, so 2018 will mark the return after a 59-year wait.
Entries will open on October 24, and by filling in the required forms and information available on www.1000miglia.it all the owners of cars that meet the necessary requirements will be able to apply to participate in the 36th re-enactment of “the most beautiful race in the world.”
The 440 accepted vehicles will be allowed to race, and in order to be selected, registered cars must have at least one of the following documents: ACI-CSAI (Italian Automobile Sport Commission), Htp FIA (Historic technical passport issued by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) or FIVA ID (Identity Card of Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens). Registered cars will be selected by a special commission consisting of experts nominated by 1000 Miglia Srl and by international technical commissioners from the FIVA Technical Commission.
