Vince di Pierro knows what he likes. So much so that four years ago he sank more than $100,000 into a car he spotted at an auction; a car he knew absolutely nothing about.
According to Di Pierro, “I used to go to these auctions run by the state of California for people who died intestate. One day, I saw this aluminum-bodied car and wondered, ‘What in the world is that?’ The thing was painted AMC powder blue and there was nothing to give a hint as to what it was. It was just a cool-looking car with a two-cylinder engine. I fell in love with the lines and knew I had to have it. I figured no one would bid much on it, so I took a check for $50,000. I wound up the high bidder at $90,000 with the other $40,000 going on credit cards. That was a painful day. Truth is I had no idea what I was buying; none at all.
