The Nissan Restoration Club has announced that it is undertaking the restoration of the Safari Rally Z, a model that took two overall victories in the fabled East African Safari Rally in 1971 and 1973. The car in question won the 19th Safari Rally in 1971, driven by Edgar Hermann and Hans Schüller, while a similar Z driven by Shekhar Mehta and Lofty Drews took top honors two years later. The Safari Rally Z is part of Nissan’s Heritage Collection, and the restoration club is a group of volunteers from the company’s R&D department who desire to see Nissan’s historic racecars fully operational again. This will be the ninth such vehicle to receive their attentions, and the project is scheduled for completion by December 2013.
