San Francisco Bay Area vintage car enthusiasts and select members of The Guardsmen, a charitable organization which sponsored a series of sports car races in Golden Gate Park in the early 1950s, have formed the Golden Gate Grand Prix Association. The purpose of the GGGPA is to organize and support the running of the 2007 Golden Gate Grand Prix, a weekend of vintage motorsport in Golden Gate Park.
The original Guardsmen Cup Race was held in Golden Gate Park in 1952, 1953 & 1954. This new event will be designed as a tribute to the original, with pre-’60 sports cars in five groups competing in era and displacement specific races. The Golden Gate Grand Prix Association is the only vintage racing association affiliated with The Guardsmen in recreating this historic event and the only vintage racing association with a permit to conduct an actual race in Golden Gate Park.
Members of the board of directors of GGGPA, including CEO, Scott Thompson and COO, Dan Radowicz have secured a permit for the event from the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Dept. and a date has been set for June 16–17th, 2007.
The weekend of racing will be sanctioned and run by the Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG), a 40-year-old Northern California vintage racing organization. CSRG has chosen a 1.9-mile course highlighted by a Start/Finish straightaway along The Great Highway (HWY 1).
The 2007 Golden Gate Grand Prix will be free to the public and proceeds from the concessions, entry fees and sponsorship will be donated to various San Francisco-based charities.
