The Historic Racing Drivers Club has announced a new invitational series for Jaguar Touring Cars built between 1950 and 1966, to be known as The Coombs Jaguar Challenge, named for famed Jaguar entrant John Coombs. Following the success of its entry-level, one-make “Academy” Series for Austin A30/35 cars, next year the HRDC will introduce a “Senior” Series for historic Jaguar Touring Cars that raced in period from 1950 to 1966. Eligible cars will race on an “invitation only” basis to period regulations, and run on mandatory Dunlop CR65 historic racing tires.
“From the very beginning of my plans to create an entry-level series into historic racing,” said Julius Thurgood, Race Director and founder of the Historic Racing Drivers Club, “I knew that there had to be a logical path to follow on from the HRDC Academy that would be aspirational to both those drivers who were graduating through this grassroots series and to those already experienced competitors who were seeking to race in a high-end but fair-play Senior Series. To also have Coombs Automotive, one of the greatest names ever associated with the Jaguar marque, on board as the principal sponsor of this series simply crowns a very exciting package!”
During the remainder of its current racing season, the HRDC will create a special invitation class within its “Touring Greats” category for those competitors with appropriate cars who would like to experience a first-hand preview of the club’s special approach to historic racing.
