The 2009 Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races will take place June 5-7 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia.
In a new venture that starts this year, SVRA and VIR joined together to host the Gold Cup, so the Heacock Classic Gold Cup should be one of the best ever and should attract the best and most interesting vintage racecars on the East Coast.
This year’s schedule includes the Peter Morgan Memorial Race, an MG Racers Focus event, plus Historic Stock Cars and a wide-ranging collection of road racers from pre-war to the classic modern eras.
“VIR’s history includes the classic days of the 1950s when Carroll Shelby won the first feature race at the track in 1957,” said track general manager Josh Lief. “We are proud to celebrate VIR’s history each year at the Heacock Classic Gold Cup races and appreciate the support of Heacock Classic very much.”
“Some of the most interesting events at VIR have been our vintage weekends,” he continued. “We have been lucky to host cars and drivers who raced here in that first event in past Gold Cups. This is another link in the chain to the past that makes VIR such a special place.”
Heacock Classic Insurance is once again the title sponsor of this race weekend. Company president Ford Heacock III is one of the founding fathers of vintage road racing, having founded both the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA), the leading organization for vintage racing and partner with VIR in the Gold Cup, and Vintage Motorsport magazine. “I am excited to continue our support of the Gold Cup Historic Races at VIR,” remarked Ford Heacock. “Attaching the Heacock name to such a fine vintage event that includes my old friends at SVRA is both good business and great fun.”
This year’s line up is full of interesting vehicles, including the roaring Historic Stock Cars. One unique car, a 1962 Marcos GT coupe is entered, bringing the sole gullwing Marcos in the US to this event. The interesting little car is joined on the track by a 1935 Morgan ‘trike’ and numerous other interesting road racing machines including Porsches, Corvettes, Aston Martins and Ferraris.
Tickets for the Gold Cup are only $30 in advance for the entire weekend, with one-day tickets $10 each in advance. Three-day tickets at the gate are $40, or $20 for one-day admission. Teen fans aged fifteen and under are admitted free at VIR’s spectator events, when with a paid adult guest.
