There’s sun, sea, surf and sand on a summer Sunday morning — no it’s not California, but Weymouth on the English Riviera. It’s the background and setting for an event that’s neither a razzmatazz nor high-brow affair, just a handful of classic car enthusiasts of the Transport of Yesteryear (Dorset) Club exhibiting their pride and joy on the Esplanade for passing holiday makers to enjoy. What’s more, all display vehicles had to pay parking charges for their bother.
This was a promotional event for the Club’s headline attraction at the end of June at nearby Chickerell, West Dorset and a fundraiser for the local Air Ambulance. While just few in number, there are some quite interesting vehicles among the gathered throng, including a plethora of Porsches, a 1953 MG TD, a 1947 Morris 10/4 series M saloon and a 1935 Beardmore Taxi Cab — all lovingly pampered and presented.
Events such as this are the lifeblood, spirit and soul of historic motoring, preservation and restoration. Many are organized in the UK during the Spring and Summer months, and most go unnoticed by the motoring press. I was particularly pleased to while away an hour or so in the company of such aficionados, and give them a mention on a much bigger platform than they’re used to.
For those interested, the Transport of Yesteryear Club’s Annual Classic Car Show will take place at Chickerell on June 25. For further details of the Club please visit www.transportofyesteryear.com
