Monoposto Racing, one of North America’s finest open-wheel vintage racing organizations, has announced that Barry Durham and Joe Blacker have been crowned the 2004 series champions. Champions are named based upon their best results in six races in two categories. The first category, F70, consists of Formula 5000, Formula Two, Formula Atlantic, Formula Super Vee and FF70 Club Fords. The second category, Classic, consists of Formula B, Formula Two, Formula Junior, Formula Ford and Formula Vee cars.
Barry Durham of Danville, VA, driving a 1977 Merlyn Mk 30 FF70 Club Ford in its first year of Monoposto eligibility, had three 1st-in-class finishes over the season, to secure the F70 championship by a wide margin. Durham will receive the Gilles Villeneuve Trophy named in honor of the world famous Formula One competitor.
Joe Blacker of Columbia, MD, driving a 1969 Brabham BT29 Formula B, had six 1st-in-class finishes during the season to clinch the Classic championship by a narrow margin. Blacker will receive the Juan Manuel Fangio Trophy honoring the five-time Formula One champion.
In addition to the champions, class winners were also announced and included: Bobby Brown (F70 F2), Ian Baas (F70 Atlantic), Dan Schmutte (F70 Super Vee), Phil Harris (Classic F2), Larry Rossi (Classic FF), Shairon Beale (Classic F.Jr.), and Frank Newton (Classic FVee).
