1953 Ghia Abarth

The 1953 Turin Auto Show must have been quite a sight. It presented cars of what would become a landmark year. But most enthusiasts in attendance would not know how fortunate they were. To them, this was just another car show.

To Carlo Abarth, however, this show was something special. The car that would bear his name was the result of his new collaboration with Ghia—a stunningly clean and simple form presented on a Victorian frame, atop red velvet. The Abarth was a show-stopper, but soon after the debut, it receded into obscurity. Sixty-two years later it stunned attendants of the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it won its class and became runner up for Best of Show.
