AC Cobra Race - Shelby Cup at Goodwood Revival 2012

The Shelby Cup race at the 2012 Goodwood Revival was held Saturday, September 15th at the 2.4 mile Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.

This year’s Saturday feature race showcased a grid exclusively made up of AC Cobras and variants, in celebration of the model’s 50th anniversary. The one-model race included the finest collection of significant and authentic racing AC Cobras ever assembled in the UK. It was a 45-minute two-driver race, with driver changes in the pits between 15 and 30 minutes. With a mixture of standard cars and special-bodied coupes, it made for an intriguing spectacle and a fitting tribute to this iconic Anglo-American sports car.

The checkered flag at the first-ever Shelby Cup race for AC and Shelby Cobras fell to Andy Wolfe and Rob Hall. However, the early running was made interesting by Derek Hill aboard Daniella Ellerbrock’s Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe. The former F3000 racer, and son of 1961 Formula One World Champion Phil Hill, blasted into an early lead from pole position as Ludovic Caron and David Hart battled behind him. Hill eked out the lead and was among backmarkers inside ten laps. At quarter-distance, Hill pitted to hand over to Kenny Brack. The Swede then proceeded to lap at a blistering pace, only to return to the pits three tours later amid a fog of smoke.

Caron pitted two laps later, handing over to Anthony Reid. The Scot put on a charge to take the lead which he held until, with four minutes left to go, part of his car’s exhaust pipe worked loose. A further section threatened to do the same which resulted in him being black flagged. He resisted pitting for several laps until, with four minutes left to run, he drove into the pits. Reid returned trackside and finished third on the road although the results remain provisional. As the Hall family toasted success, Hart and Tom Cornonel finished a fighting second.

Similar to the one-model Fordwater Trophy 2011 race for Jaguar E-Types, Senior Photographer Tim Scott also documented the 2012 Goodwood Revival, including the following pictures from the Shelby Cup race that honored the 50th anniversary of the AC Cobra.
