A Famous Victory

1938 German Grand Prix

It had been 15 years since a British driver had won a full-scale Grand Prix race before Richard Seaman, with a Mercedes-Benz, defeated the cream of Europe’s drivers to take the laurels in the German Grand Prix, on July 24, at the Nürburgring.

Seaman, famous for his steady, unruffled driving style, averaged 80.61 mph for the 22 laps (311.6 miles) of the race, and also put in fastest lap at 83.71 mph to take victory. The sister Mercedes-Benz of Rudolf Caracciola finished 2nd, with the Auto Union of Hans Stuck completing the all-German manufacturer podium.
