The all-electric Renault 5 Turbo 3E has made its UK public dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, tackling the famous hillclimb alongside the iconic 1980 Renault 5 Turbo that inspired its creation.
The two cars appeared together outside Goodwood House before launching up the hill in tandem, creating one of the festival’s standout moments by celebrating Renault’s rally heritage while showcasing its electric performance future.
Inspired by one of the most legendary hot hatches of the 1980s, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is the most powerful road-going Renault ever produced. It develops 555 hp and an astonishing 4,800 Nm of wheel torque through twin rear-mounted in-wheel electric motors. Thanks to its lightweight carbon-fibre superstructure, the 3E weighs around 1,450 kg, enabling a 0–62 mph time of under 3.5 seconds.
The new flagship also features an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing ultra-fast DC charging at up to 330 kW, making it as capable on long journeys as it is on the track. Production of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will be limited to 1,980 individually numbered examples, commemorating the launch year of the original Renault 5 Turbo. Priced from £140,000, reservations are now open, with first customer deliveries expected in 2027.
Joining the 3E on the hill was a beautifully preserved 1980 Renault 5 Turbo owned by private collector Richard Head. The car has its own Goodwood connection, with Richard inspired to purchase one after spotting a Renault 5 Turbo in a Festival of Speed car park years ago. He eventually found the highly original red example that now forms a prized part of his collection.
Describing the car as “a defibrillator of a car,” Richard watched it share the hillclimb with its modern electric successor, symbolically passing the Renault 5 Turbo performance legacy to a new generation.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed continues until Sunday, 12 July, where the Renault 5 Turbo 3E stars on the Renault stand alongside the brand’s latest electric models, including the Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault 4 E-Tech and the new Twingo.
