When the first “Birdcage” Maseratis burst onto the world racing stage in 1959, a number of people were shocked and many laughed at their “strange” chassis, made up of hundreds of pieces of small tubing. A few dominant racing victories turned the nay-sayers around pretty quickly, and it was not long before the “Birdcage” was acknowledged as one of the toughest and most striking of all front-engined sports cars.
