Remarkable Rindt

The 1970 Monaco Grand Prix had a dramatic ending when leader Jack Brabham made a mistake at the last corner—the Gasworks Hairpin—and slid into the barrier! Jochen Rindt drove an astonishing race, closing in on “Black Jack” lap after lap, in his Gold Leaf Team Lotus type 49C, and took a remarkable victory. Jochen’s pace was such that he set a new lap record on this the final lap.

When it was suggested I should do a painting of Rindt, this stunning Monaco victory instantly came to mind, a race I remember watching live on television. Jochen was driving like a man possessed, hanging the tail out, sliding everywhere, and pressuring Brabham into that costly mistake at the final corner.
