My father was in the Royal Air Force, so we tended to live on flat bits of England, a long way from the nearest town. That is a long way in English terms, seeing that the entire country is smaller than one third of California. Since I grew up among aircraft, of incredible variety in the 1950s, I suppose it was natural that I became interested in cars and then in motor racing.
I committed to motor racing on the 1st of February, 1957, when I bought my first copy of Motor Sport. I read it from cover to cover and back again. I was told by parents and teachers that it would do me no good. I became editor of Motor Sport in 1984. If only my teachers had given me good advice, like telling me to become a divorce lawyer.
