Car Profile – Siata Daina Gran Sport

Model: 1953 Siata Daina Gran Sport

Drivetrain: Non-original Alfa Romeo 4-cylinder and 5-speed

Colors: Red and Tan Leather

Price: Currently bid to $53,700 with three days left; reserve not met.

Market: The 2008 Sports Car Market Price Guide suggests a $55,000 – $85,000 price range for a Mexico coupe, while the January – May Cars That Matter Price Guide advocates a $38,000 – $87,000 range.

Given the car’s rarity and solid #2 condition, we would give more weight to the upper end of the price ranges, if not beyond. We would feel more certain of that if it had the correct Fiat 1400 engine. The given VIN# SL 0217 does match a Gran Sport spider.

For reference, the Daina’s more notable 208S brother is now probably north of $500,000, although it caught the rising Otto Vu tide.

Seller Comments: “As seen at Amelia Island Concours 2008, this 16,922 km (10,576 mi) original has had a bare metal show quality paint job on a rust free body and chassis. Interior was redone in leather with wool carpets. Car has a new tonneau but no top or side curtains.  A rebuilt Alfa Romeo w/ Weber carbs provides lots of power. Alfa 5 speed trans is linked to the original rear axle (Fiat 1400). Brake system has been updated to a dual (Tilton) balance bar, and current tech brake shoes with the original Alfin aluminum drums.  Removable roll bar, and Fuel Safe cell have been fitted for vintage racing.  This vehicle has been prepared to participate in vintage rallies, currently in show trim. It’s fast, nimble and a blast to drive. The roll bar and fuel cell convey with car.”

SCD Comments: The Siata Daina Gran Sport is a very unique and highly collectible Italian. Siatas share many lines with Ferrari’s of its era. It can be argued that some, including the Daina’s 208S brother, are better looking that the more famous Ferraris.

This Siata Daina Gran Sport has been prepared for vintage rallies or racing with the addition of a removable roll bar and a fuel cell. Although the Alfa engine and 5-speed are not original, they are typically cheap to operate. Plus, the Alfa engine in the lightweight Siata body should make for a pretty quick and nimble vintage race or rally car.
